Schumacher’s 2023
For the first time after two seasons spent at the wheel of the Haas, the starting grid of the 2023 world championship will not see the presence of Mick Schumacher. The German, who didn’t particularly convince the upper echelons of the US team during the last championship, was in fact not reconfirmed for this season, however finding a rather unique ‘way out’: the 23-year-old will in fact continue his stay in Formula 1, but as third driver of McLaren and, above all, of Mercedes.
Schumacher and Ocon: two friends, one destination
A team, the latter, decidedly of a high level and fundamental for being able to increase his talent on a Formula 1 single-seater, and which could therefore prove to be decisive for his possible return as an official driver in the next championships. The transition from Haas to Brackley recalled, in terms of modality and destination, the one that saw the protagonist between 2o18 and 2019 Esteban Ocon, who was also a close friend of Schumacher himself. The transalpine, now in Alpine, in fact lost its place in Force India after the sale of the latter to Lawrence Stroll, with the team changing its name to Racing Point before becoming Aston Martin. In that circumstance, Ocon went to Mercedes as third driver.
The big break
An experience that not only allowed him to immediately return to the grid in 2020 with Renault (now known as Alpine), but which proved to be of great help in increasing his skills in the top flight. Ocon himself reviews and recognizes the situation he experienced with the one Schumacher is experiencing today, considering him almost lucky to have this great opportunity: “He has a very rare opportunitywhich I also had – has explained – he can work with a team that has dominated the sport for a long time and that has a lot of knowledge, and that’s no small thing. It’s an excellent opportunity for those aiming to return”.
Trust in the return
Ocon’s wish is that this great possibility could therefore favor the return of the German, even if the French have few uncertainties on this aspect: “I hope Mick finds a solution soon, but I have no doubts that in that case he will enjoy full confidence – he underlined – he’s already developing the car for the next year or two and that’s invaluable in a team with such a huge capacity, and he knows it.”
