“‘We congratulate the successful celebration of the largest elections in the history of the country last Sunday. We especially celebrate this historic moment for Mexico“, noted the Organization of American States (OAS) on social networks.
Heraldo Muñoz also congratulated Claudia Sheinbaum for obtaining victory in the presidential elections and highlighted the response of the losing candidates to accept the results.
In addition, he reported that the OAS Electoral Observation Mission presented a report in which it makes recommendations and notes on the electoral process, of which it acknowledged that there were minor incidents.
“The Electoral Observation Mission of the Organization of American States (EOM/OAS), headed by the former Foreign Minister of Chile, Heraldo Muñoz, congratulates the people of Mexico for the success achieved in holding federal and local elections largest in its history last Sunday, June 2,” he noted in the report.
“Around 56 million Mexican citizens exercised their right to vote to elect 20,708 positions at the federal, state and municipal levels.”
The EOM/OAS highlighted the historic result of this election given that, for the first time in 200 years, a woman will occupy the Presidency of the Republic in Mexico.
“The Mission congratulates the presidential candidate of the Let’s Keep Making History coalition, Claudia Sheinbaum, for her resounding victory,” he stressed.
He positively highlighted that the presidential contenders who were not favored at the polls accepted the official results once published by the National Electoral Institute (INE), which reflects the maturity and commitment to the democratic principles that characterize the political systems.
The Mission highlighted the professionalism and technical solidity of the INE and the Electoral Tribunal of the Judicial Branch of the Federation (TEPJF), “institutions that made the successful development of the elections possible.”
Meanwhile, he recognized the work of the representatives of the polling stations, the electoral officials, the representatives of the political parties, the national observers and the security forces.
“Sunday, in which more than 98 million people were called to the polls, passed without major incidents,” he said.
“However, the Mission regrets and strongly condemns the acts of violence that occurred during the electoral campaign directed against both candidates, pre-candidates and candidates, as well as the isolated acts on election day against polling station officials. , voters and electoral material”.
He also expressed concern about the inhibiting effects that electoral violence has on Mexican democracy.
