This Sunday, the Organization of American States (OAS), accused the Venezuelan “authoritarian regime” of having “forced the exile” of Edmundo González Urrutia, whom the organization considers victorious of the presidential elections which took place in said South American country on July 28, 2024.
Through a statement, the General Secretariat of the OAS, shared that, “the regime has not only failed to produce the slightest evidence of the electoral result (…), but has forced the exile of the candidate Edmundo González,” who undoubtedly won the last elections.
In fact, the Organization of American States describes in its statement the citations that were issued by the Venezuelan Prosecutor’s Office against Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutiaand the action of the “regime” is “condemnable and repudiable” Nicolas Maduro.
The Spanish government received Edmundo González Urrutia this Sunday in its country, to provide him with political asylum and after having taken refuge for a time in the residence of the Embassy of Spain in Caracas, and also in another European legation, the Dutch one, and thus avoid being detained in Venezuela.
It is worth noting that the Venezuelan justice system had issued an arrest warrant against the opposition leader after he ignored three summons from the Prosecutor’s Office, which accuses him of various crimes for publishing voting records on the Internet, which would give him victory in the presidential elections in July.
Regarding the situation, the National Electoral Council, first, and the Supreme Court, later, endorsed the victory of President Nicolás Maduro in the July elections, while the opposition denounced a “major electoral fraud”, defending a clear victory of Edmundo González Urrutia.
The OAS stated that this “electoral process has not ended” and that “we must continue working so that the true winner of the elections of July 28 assumes the Presidency of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela” in January of next year.
For her part, Venezuelan opposition member Maria Corina Machado said she will continue fighting from Venezuela while the anti-Chavez candidate Gonzalez Urrutia will do so “from outside.”
“Let this be very clear to everyone: Edmundo will fight from outside alongside our diaspora and I will continue to do so here, alongside you,” Corina shared through the X platform.
