In the case of the murder of ex-President of Haiti Jovenel Moise, a new name has appeared among the suspects – this is his wife Martina, who was allegedly involved in the assassination attempt. The newspaper reported this on February 6 The New York Times.
Among the former Colombian soldiers and Haitian government officials charged in the case is one surprising name: former first lady Martine Moise, who was seriously injured in the attack.
It is noted that the criminal complaint filed by the prosecutor in the Haitian court does not directly accuse Martina Moise of planning the murder of her husband, but it states that she gave testimony that was refuted by other witnesses. In addition, one of the main suspects, who is currently in custody, claims that Ms. Moïse wanted to take over the presidency. However, her lawyer denied the accusations.
“We do not believe that she is or could ever be a suspect in this case. She was a victim, as were her children who were there and her husband,” said the widow’s lawyer, Paul Turner.
According to some legal analysts cited by the newspaper, the situation with the complaint about the possible participation of Martine Moïse in the preparation of the assassination attempt on the president was used to divert attention from accusations of involvement in the case of some high-ranking officials, including Prime Minister Ariel Henry, who, according to records, spoke on the phone with a key plotter shortly before the murder.
The assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse became known on July 7, 2021. He was fatally wounded during an attack by a group of unknown persons on his residence. During the investigation into the murder, several local police officers, including those responsible for the president's security, were placed in a Haitian prison. After the death of Jovenel Moïse, a political crisis erupted in the state.
On January 3, 2022, four police officers previously detained as part of the investigation into the assassination of the Haitian President were temporarily released. A day after this, another suspect was detained in Panama – Colombian Mario Antonio Palacios. He was deported to the USA.
Later, on October 20, 2023, Haitian police detained a former official who allegedly ordered the murder of Jovenel Moïse. The suspect turned out to be Joseph-Felix Badio, who had previously served in the anti-corruption department. He was dismissed from service for serious ethical violations.
