Steam is the gaming platform most used by PC players, as well as the one with the largest catalog of titles ever. Valve's client is used by over 150 million users per month, with peaks reaching 34 million players simultaneously.
Every month Steam carries out a survey involving millions of people and which outlines which hardware is most used, and then draws up a ranking based on percentages. NVIDIA and Intel have dominated these rankings for years and in March 2024 things have not changed. But which GPUs and CPUs are most used by gamers?
The kingdom of NVIDIA
According to the latest statistics published by Steam, in terms of graphics cards NVIDIA has a dominant presence in gamer PCs with a base of 78%. 14.64 of the players have an AMD GPU, while 7.24% belong to Intel which can count on a large number of iGPUs.
93.76 of users have a GPU compatible with DirectX 12 and if we analyze the numbers on individual products, NVIDIA once again comes out on top.
In fact, it leads the ranking of the most used GPUs NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060: graphics cards featuring the Ampere GPU released in 2021 win the scepter of most used hardware with a presence of 6.92%, with an increase of + 0.75% in the last month alone.
Despite the launch of the new generation, the second most used GPU is once again NVIDIA with its GeForce RTX 2060 which stands at 4.10%, while in third place we find the GTX 1650 with 4.07%.
Among the latest generation GPUs, the GeForce RTX 4060 is the most popular with a percentage of 2.59%, followed closely by the GeForce RTX 4070 with 2.50%. The only recent AMD card is the Radeon RX 7900 XTX with 0.34%.
The CPU front
On the CPU side, the loud voice is Intel taking home 68.07% of the processors. In this case, however, AMD manages to grab a large share of the market with a share of 31.93%.
The ones that are the most popular are CPUs with 6 cores with 35.69%, followed by 8-core ones with 19.49%. There are many players still stuck at 4 cores with a percentage of 19.30%.
In short, according to the preferences of Steam players, NVIDIA and Intel seem to largely dominate the PC market. According to the latest rumors, NVIDIA could soon discontinue the production of the RTX 40 series in favor of the new Blackwell architecture graphics cards. What emerges perhaps most clearly, however, is that not all players have the latest generation hardware and many past glories are still widely used.
