People rescued total 77,711 and another 581,638 are homeless; municipalities still face flooded areas
Rio Grande do Sul counts 169 deaths caused by heavy rains and floods that have hit the state since the end of April. A new balance released by Civil defense of Rio Grande do Sul this Sunday morning (May 26, 2024) still records 56 missing people and another 806 injured people.
More than 2.3 million people were affected in some way and 581,000 were displaced. 55,813 people still remain in temporary shelters.
Due to the floods, 77,711 people were left stranded and needed to be rescued. To date, 12,503 animals have also been rescued.
RIVERS LEVELS IN RS
Despite the heavy rains having given a respite this weekend, Guaíba remains at a level above 4 meters. The value is 1 meter above the flood level, which is 3 meters. The same occurs with Lagoa dos Patos, which has a level above 2 meters, with the flood level being 1.3 meters.
Meteorological services still predict new rains in the State, with possible hail, frost and strong winds.
Across the state, there are still more than 113,000 points without electricity. Of the 2,340 schools in Rio Grande do Sul, 588 are still not returning to classes.
Currently, there are 67 sections with total and partial closures on 42 highways, including roads, bridges and ferries. The information comes from Daer (Autonomous Highway Department), consolidated with the CRBM (Military Brigade Road Command), also covering highways granted and those managed by EGR (Empresa Gaúcha de Rodovia).
