Nuclear power Fennovoima’s nuclear project took a leap forward: Stuk begins preparing a safety assessment

According to Stuk, Fennovoima submitted a significant number of planning documents towards the end of the year, on the basis of which a safety assessment is made. Fennovoima would like a building permit already this year.

Pyhäjoki The preparation of the nuclear power project has progressed so far that the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (Stuk) says that it has begun preparing a safety assessment of the power plant. Although the power plant’s customer, Fennovoima, has not yet submitted all the plans required by the authorities, Stuk still has sufficient material to start preparing the safety assessment and carry out the work in stages.

However, it is too early to assess when Stuk’s safety assessment could be completed, says the project manager Janne Nevalainen.

Stuk may require changes to the plans it receives. To date, it has made approximately 800 requests for clarification, to which Fennovoima must respond.

Stuk’s safety assessment is crucial for the implementation of the project. It is a precondition for the Government to grant Fennovoima a building permit.

Fennovoiman the project has already suffered from delays at the permitting stage. Fennovoima and plant supplier Rosatom have had difficulty delivering the plans required by Stuk.

However, Stuk’s announcement on Thursday says that the companies have succeeded in correcting their operations.

According to Nevalainen, Fennovoima submitted a significant amount of new material towards the end of the year. He estimates that Stuk has now received roughly three-quarters of the required documents.

However, Stuk still lacks key documents. Such is, for example, the threat analysis of the plant.

Fennovoima’s goal is that the last materials related to the building permit will be submitted to the authority during February, when the building permit could come later this year.
