The Suviana tragedy has put the spotlight on the safety of industrial plants and on the issue of safety at work.
“It is not the time for accusations, but for help,” said the governor of the Emilia-Romagna region Stefano Bonaccini last night, visibly shaken by the drama. But now that the accident of the Suviana hydroelectric power plant becomes less and less mysterious about the causes and what happened, the scenario for investigations opens up.
The tragedy shocked Italy. The accident in the Bargi hydroelectric power plant, on Lake Suviana, caused the immediate death of three people and seriously injured five others. Four people are still missing from theexplosion which involved the depths of the plant.
The Bologna Prosecutor's Office has opened a case for disaster and manslaughter. The investigation is coordinated by the Chief Prosecutor Giuseppe Amato and the prosecutor Flavio Lazzarini. The objective is to ascertain the causes of the accident and to identify any responsibilities behind this painful event for many families, originating from half of Italy, and the entire Bolognese community.
The first investigative hypotheses exclude any involvement or any failure of the dam. At the moment, however, it remains very difficult to talk about the “dynamics” of the accident. The Prosecutor's Office is acquiring all the useful elements to reconstruct what happened in its entirety. The provincial commander of the Bologna fire brigade Calogero Turturici said yesterday:
The accident occurred below the water level: there is a lot of smoke, we struggle to enter the premises. To provide aid you need visibility and low temperatures. […] On those floors there were transformers. We don't know the causes. We will need testimony from those who were on site. The premises are now submerged in water. If the site of the accident is not made available for investigation, it is difficult to hypothesize one specific type of scenario or another.
The words of a survivor
Speaking is one of the survivors Pierfrancesco Firenze, his words are precious: “I saw the flame and then the smoke, I heard the explosion. I'm fine but unfortunately this happened.”. And his wife, Emilia Ferdighini said: ”He was out with two of his other colleagues. They saw this blaze and then the smoke, she heard a bang. He was a bit in shock: everyone here knows each other a bit”
The operations of search and rescue they are made difficult by the water that continues to invade the premises. The firefighters are working tirelessly to recover the missing people and to make the area safe. Unfortunately, the current operations are considered by experts to be merely “recovery” given that the hopes of finding survivors are very remote.
The Suviana tragedy has put the spotlight on the safety of industrial plants and on the issue of job security. The plant had received reports on maintenance measures that would be necessary. The general secretary of Uil, Pierpaolo Bombardieri, has expressed his opinion on the issue of victims at work:
Already in 2022, our organization had reported some safety-related issues for that plant through its representatives. The Uil has the task of protecting its delegates, its safety representatives and its members and, if necessary, will take steps to provide the judiciary with all the relevant information and documentation.
