The confirmation
With a press release issued this afternoon, Alpine has officially announced the cessation of activities of the F1 engine department at the end of the 2025 season. The transalpine team will therefore transform the ‘Hypertech’ project of the Viry-Chatillon engine division into ‘Hypertech Alpine’, making it a new cutting-edge engineering center that will contribute to the development of very high performance vehicles, which will study technological innovations both for Alpine and for the Renault Group.
A historic change
The Viry-Chatillon engine plant has been producing engines since Renault’s entry into Formula 1 in 1977 and will therefore close its doors at the end of 2025. no longer manufacturing engines for the top series after 48 years. It was not a painless transition, with factory staff representatives repeatedly expressing their disagreement with the company’s decision.
Alpine he assured that “the consultation process with employee representatives was constructive” and he guaranteed that “all workers affected by the transformation project will be offered a new position within the Hypertech project“. There will also be a unit called di “F1 monitoring”which will have as its objective the maintenance of employee know-how.
And now Mercedes
It is no mystery that Alpine will turn to Mercedes for the supply of the new generation of power units, although official confirmation is still missing. The parties have been in negotiations for months now, with ambitious objectives: at the beginning of July Flavio Briatore – executive advisor of the team – had in fact assured that the team “will fight for victories” right from 2026. The Italian manager hopes to draw the wild card, given that it is whispered that the Mercedes engine could have an important performance advantage with the regulations that will come into force in two years.
