We still talk about the Alonso-Russell episode
The Formula 1 Circus moved to Suzuka this weekend to compete in the Japanese GP. On the day dedicated to the meeting with journalists, however, one of the predominant times still concerned the race held in Melbourne two weeks ago: the riders were in fact asked about the controversial penalty imposed on Fernando Alonso For “potentially dangerous driving” in the duel with George Russell, which ended with the spectacular accident involving the Englishman from Mercedes two laps from the end of the GP.
Alonso would have – according to the commissioners – braked too early on the approach to turn 6, taking Russell by surprise and thus indirectly causing the accident. Most of the drivers seemed to agree with the stewards, supporting the decision to impose a penalty on Alonso. Lando Norris, however, went against the trendmaking some criticisms of his friend from Mercedes and defending the Spanish champion, with whom he had shared the garage (albeit as a 'simple' test driver) in 2018 during the last season in McLaren of the #14.
Norris' version
“It shouldn't be a penalty episode – commented Norris, when asked by journalists – what Fernando did was strange but I don't think it's even remotely considered brake testing. I don't know if he braked and downshifted, but I don't think it's a maneuver that should be penalized in any way.”. Norris actually moved itPay attention to Russell's reaction times: “George, in my opinion, should have seen this coming. I don't want to comment too much, but George had time to see what was going on“.
Even the fact that Russell's off-track exit ended in a rather 'spectacular' accident – although fortunately without consequences for the Englishman – had a weight in the evaluation according to Norris: “If it had been an off-track exit onto an asphalt escape route there probably would not have been any penalty. I don't know, I'm not the one making the decisions, so maybe it's best if I don't comment further“, then commented the #4 of McLaren.
