Three drivers in 21 thousandths
Almost two years after the first position achieved in his career in the 2022 Hungarian Grand Prix, George Russell returned to occupy the first spot on the starting grid in Canadian Grand Prix, with the same time set shortly after by Max Verstappen. According to the regulations in these particular cases, the driver who finished the lap first gets the pole, with the possibility of being able to start from the pole in Montreal also missed by Lando Norris.
No regrets
In fact, the British driver from McLaren finished just 21 thousandths behind the drivers who will occupy the front row, even if the #4 did not seem at all disappointed by the result to the microphones of Sky Sports F1 in post-qualification interviews: “I don’t think I missed this pole, I think I had a good ride – he explained without regrets – if I had done a perfect lap maybe I could have taken pole, but I think it was impossible to do that here in Montreal. It’s a difficult circuit and then there’s the wind, the rain and the curbs. It’s really very complicated to put everything together. It was difficult, but at the same time I’m happy with 3rd placethen there’s Oscar 4th and as a team we did better than anyone else today”.
Victory not impossible
Second row is all McLaren, with Norris also looking positively at the race scheduled for 8pm Italian time on Sunday: “We hope to be able to realize all this tomorrow, but the challenge will simply be the race and how long the tires last – he added – I think I can win, but we need to see how long the tires will last and we need to try to overtake, which will be another problem because we weren’t at the top in terms of straight line speed over the weekend, but we’ll see. We have a good chance, we are in a good position and with the strategies and pit stops we can do it.”
