McLaren's 2024 season seems to have started off on the right foot. After four GPs the Woking team is in third place in the Constructors' standings with a rather clear advantage over Mercedes and Aston Martin and has already achieved a podium thanks to the third place achieved in Melbourne by Lando Norris. However, Red Bull's supremacy and the big step forward made this year by Ferrari make it difficult for Norris himself and Oscar Piastri to think they can compete for anything more than good placings.
A limbo recognized by the Englishman #4 himself, who, speaking in a press conference on the eve of the Shanghai weekend, dismissed the chances of finally achieving his long-awaited first success in Formula 1. “It won't come soon, that's for sure – admitted Norris in front of journalists – but I believe we can get there, in the right place and at the right time, if we improve the car in the right way.”
Recently the team principal of the historic British team, Andrea Stella, had appeared more optimistic from this point of view, but Norris explained that he did not disagree with his boss's ambitions for success: “For the whole season so far we have been in the same position: behind Red Bull, behind Ferrari and a little ahead of the other two teams [Mercedes e Aston Martin]. Last weekend too it went exactly like this. We know the problems, we know what we need to improve. If we can improve them, I think Andrea is right: I think this year we can win races and be competitive with the other two teams ahead of us. But it's a big 'if'.”
