Argentina, Nordio says no to extradition of Don Reverberi
Don Franco Reverberithe priest of the diocese of Parma accused of various crimes committed in Argentina during the civic-military dictatorship of 1976-83, including the murder in 1976 of Josè Guillermo Beron, twenty years old at the time and still desaparecido, he will not be handed over to the Argentine authorities to be tried, is what Adnkronos reports.
Nordio: “Serious health risks”
From the extradition of Don Franco Reverberi to Argentina serious health risks could arise for the 87-year-old priest, explained the Minister of Justice Carlo Nordio, who with a provision dated last January 10th did not grant the priest's extradition. In the measure the minister underlines that “the medical-legal report ordered by the Court of Appeal of Bologna concluded that 'Reverberi's current health conditions are compatible with the transfer to Argentina', limiting the assessment to the health conditions compatible with the possibility of carrying out an intercontinental air journey, failing however to evaluate the existence of serious risks that could arise from the extradition procedure as a whole”.
For the owner of the department of via Arenula “in any case the air transfer should be carried out only if assisted by a series of precautions which are very difficult to implement jointly in practice and in any case unsuitable for ensuring Reverberi's state of health”. “The overall procedure could have disastrous consequences on the subject, even after the transfer and the start of the prison condition to which he will be subjected” we read in the provision. According to Minister Nordio, “the medical-legal impact of the extradition procedure on the already precarious health conditions, also due to the extremely advanced age and the consequent probable prospect of never returning to Italian territory, would result in significant psychological stress such as to integrate an additional risk factor”.
The yes of the Supreme Court
Don Reverberi is also accused of having witnessed numerous tortures to which the prisoners of the Videla regime were subjected before being killed and made to disappear. “The Court of Cassation last October, incorporating the arguments of the lawyer Arturo Salerni, lawyer of the Argentine embassy in Italy, had confirmed the decision of the Bologna Court of Appeal rejecting the appeal against extradition presented by the priest's defence” explained the non-profit organization 24marzo.it which had broken the news of Nordio's no.
“Minister Nordio had 45 days to confirm or deny the decision. Well, he rejected it. Don Reverberi is 87 years old and like several other individuals accused of having been an active part in the crimes committed during the dictatorships of the Cono Sur, such as for example Carlos Malatto, Daniel Cherutti, Jorge Troccoli, thanks to the double passport he moved to Italy many years ago and for a long time lived undisturbed'', added the non-profit organization.
Bonelli: “Serious no extradition of Reverberi”
“Minister Nordio's decision not to grant the extradition of Don Franco Reverberi is very serious. Minister Nordio rejected the decision of the Cassation and the Court of Appeal of Bologna, which had approved the extradition of Franco Reverberi, who, according to Argentine justice, had an active role in the crimes committed during the dictatorship”, he said the national co-spokesperson of Green Europe and deputy of the Green and Left Alliance, Angelo Bonelli. “In 2011, when the federal prosecutor issued a summons preparatory to arrest, Don Reverberi fled to Italy – recalls Bonelli – Minister Nordio's decision, and therefore of the Meloni government, should fill us with shame not only because it disavowed the decision of the Supreme Court and the Bologna court by rejecting the extradition, but also because it confirms how this government does not distance itself from the fascist dictatorships that have torn Latin America apart “.
