Nathalie Armbruster soon wrote her Abitur, but before that she wrote a piece of sports history. “I fight with tears that only run down my cheeks,” said the 19-year-old when she had achieved her big goal in Seefeld. The Black Forest in the World Cup was the first German combined man to be at the top of the podium – and even twice.
“I would never have expected to celebrate a World Cup victory this year,” said Armbruster, who was clearly ahead of double world champion Gyda Westvold Hansen from Norway. With this she also won the Seefeld triple: in Seefeld, the results of three different formats are taken away from day to day. The competition was also held for women for the first time. The culmination was the lead in the overall World Cup, also as the first German. “It’s all so incredible,” she said before fell into her parents.
In Tyrol she followed her motto “Eat Pasta, Run Faster” and ran away. She had already become third in the mass start competition on Friday, and on Saturday she also benefited from the disqualification of the Norwegian World Cup-leading Ida Marie Hagen, whose suit was not compliant when jumping. Hagen had won all seasonal races so far.
The national coach was also visibly moved. “This is a historical day for us,” said Florian Aichinger: “We have worked on it for so long. We were second or third so often. You can only enjoy such a day. ”Nathalie Armbruster alone had been asked for fourteen times before this weekend without ever wining.
In the men, Olympic champion Vinzenz Geiger also made it to the podium as third. Only the two Norwegians Jens Luraa’s frequentebro and Jarl Magnus Riiber were faster. “I am annoyed, it’s a bit of a shame,” said Geiger. He had made a tactical mistake shortly before the end and could no longer intervene in the target sprint. The exceptional athlete Riiber had celebrated his 77th World Cup victory on Friday, just two days after his cancellation announcement. Riiber suffers from Crohn’s disease and therefore wants to stop at the end of the season.
And what’s next for Nathalie Armbruster? The World Cup in Trondheim begins in three weeks. In the title fights two years ago, Armbruster had won silver behind Hansen with only 17 years. Now she can be trusted in Norway. The school books will have her in her luggage too, space for a medal would be found somewhere.
