The search for the winners of the 2025 Zayed Prize for Human Fraternity has officially begun with the official announcement today of the opening of nominations for the sixth edition of the independent global award. The Zayed Prize for Human Fraternity honors individuals and entities that work to promote human brotherhood and human solidarity around the world, and the prize money is worth one million US dollars.
Candidates eligible to submit nominations – including members of government, heads of non-governmental organizations, academics, religious leaders and other influential figures – can submit their nominations through the official website of the Zayedaward for Human Fraternity (zayedaward.org), during the period from June 3 to October 1, 2024.
The Zayed Prize for Human Fraternity is an independent global award granted by the Supreme Committee for Human Fraternity and includes a financial prize of one million US dollars. The award is awarded annually around February 4, which is the International Day of Human Fraternity. The winner(s) who are guided by their humanitarian efforts and the impact they make on communities are honored in the footsteps of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, may God have mercy on him, at a ceremony held in Abu Dhabi at the Founding Zayed Memorial.
The award was established in 2019 following the historic meeting in Abu Dhabi that brought together His Eminence Grand Imam Ahmed Al-Tayeb, Sheikh of Al-Azhar, and His Holiness Pope Francis, Pope of the Catholic Church, where the two leaders signed the Document on Human Fraternity. The values that the award celebrates reflect the dedication of Sheikh Zayed, may God rest his soul, in extending a helping hand to people from different cultures and backgrounds, the moral legacy he left behind, his love for goodness, respect for others, and helping them regardless of their religion, gender, race, or nationality.
Nominations for the award will be considered until October 1, 2024
The independent jury, composed of experts in the field of peacebuilding and coexistence, will review the nominations and select the winners who will be honored during a ceremony to be held in February 2025 – coinciding with the celebration of the International Day of Human Fraternity, which was unanimously adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in memory of the signing of His Eminence the Grand Imam Ahmed Al-Tayeb. Since the inception of the award, a number of leaders, activists and humanitarian organizations have been honored from various parts of the world, including: His Eminence the Grand Imam Ahmed Al-Tayeb, Sheikh of Al-Azhar Al-Sharif (honorary awardee), His Holiness Pope Francis, Pope of the Catholic Church (honorary awardee), and the Secretary-General of the United Nations. Mr. António Guterres, anti-extremism activist Latifa Ibn Zayaten, His Majesty King Abdullah II bin Al Hussein and Queen Rania Al Abdullah of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, and the Haitian humanitarian organization Foundation for Knowledge and Freedom (FOCAL); The Sant’Egidio Community Organization; Kenyan peacemaker Shamsa Abu Bakar Fadil, Indonesian philanthropic organizations Nahdlatul Ulama and Muhammadiyah, world-renowned heart surgeon Professor Sir Magdi Yacoub, and Chilean NGO founder Sister Nelly Leon Correa.
