Released in Early Access around mid-April, No Rest for the Wicked is a dark fantasy action RPG that, according to Mahler's statements on X, the social media platform formerly Twitter, will see further developments for “another five to ten years”. Mahler exclaimed:
Guys, we're far from done with No Rest for the Wicked. There's so much we've already built that none of you know anything about yet and we want to deliver it in a masterful way!
Mahler describes the game as The Lord of the Rings for their study, stating that what has been done so far is comparable to a “test screening” of the first parts.
1.0 will be our Fellowship of the Ring and as you all know, there's more to come after that. I hope you now understand why we won't be making Ori 3 anytime soon!
Additionally, Mahler used social media to manage expectations after an initially problematic launch of the game, asking players to leave a positive review on Steam to counter negative comments. He admitted:
Mea culpa, we definitely should have managed expectations better from the start.
Despite the initial difficulties, Mahler defended the decision to release the game in Early Access, noting that also PlayStation and Nintendo they should “embrace” this mode of release. Finally, for curiosity enthusiasts, Mahler revealed that every Moon Studios game begins with a storm in homage to Zelda: A Link to the Past. Despite a rocky start, No Rest for the Wicked was able to showcase compelling gameplay, although the lack of truly memorable moments tempered expectations.
