The masks have worked against Covid and will work against other infections: “If worn correctly and consistently, they are effective in reducing the transmission of respiratory diseases.” It is the main conclusion of a maxi-study published in ‘Clinical Microbiology Reviews’, journal of the American Society of Microbiology (Ams), which analyzed over 100 works on the topic, collecting “clear evidence to refute the claims of no-mask groups”, according to which “masks don’t work” or worse “they are dangerous for the general population”.
One position, the one against masks, “sometimes linked to political and ideological beliefs” and “blatantly incorrect”, write the authors who warn: “The continuing reluctance of many” on this issuealso “in the infection prevention and control community”, could pose “a serious threat to public health in future pandemics”. Especially because, the scientists note, “these people often hold influential positions on public health decision-making bodies at global and national levels.”
Instead, considering that “the Anti-mask sentiment is on the rise along with anti-vaccine sentiment“, in view of possible new emergencies, “a clear and coherent message on these matters from the public health authorities – warn the experts – would be of great help”.
