NIXON BEGINS TOUR THROUGH ISRAEL. Tel Aviv. President Richard Nixon arrived from the Arab world to the Israeli fortress heavily guarded against possible attacks by Arab guerrillas, and seriously felt by American promises to give Egypt technical know-how of nuclear capability. The presidential plane “Spirit 76” landed at the severely guarded Ben Gurrion airport, from Damascus, where the US president and President Hafez Assad announced the resumption of diplomatic relations between Washington and Syria. Israel adopted the most extreme security measures in memory for Nixon’s five-hour visit, the first by a North American president to this country. Already in Jerusalem, Nixon spoke with Israeli leaders about how to make coexistence with their Arab neighbors in the Middle East a reality. Nixon and his Secretary of State Henry Kissinger met at the King David Hotel with Israeli leaders, led by Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and Defense Minister Simón Pérez. According to official estimates, between 150,000 and 200,000 people witnessed the passing of Nixon’s motorcade. It is considered that Nixon assured the leaders that the improvement of Arab-American relations would not cloud Israeli interests and that a framework of nuclear assistance similar to that signed with Egypt would be discussed with them.
