Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa has officially stated that The long-awaited new Switch 2 will be presented next March 2025with a strong chance that the official announcement will come sometime between late winter and early spring and not as soon as 2024. Not only that: a crucial detail of the future has been confirmed gadgetthe backward compatibility with games on the current console and the Switch Online platform. A choice in the name of continuity that was almost obligatory in order not to lose the vast and varied catalog of titles and satisfy the demands of fans.
Presentation in 2025
After first statements last May, the president of Nintendo has officially confirmed that the new Switch 2 will be presented at the end of the current fiscal year, that is, in March 2025. Fans and enthusiasts hoped that the presentation could take place already in 2024, but now it is an unlikely possibility. This has been highlighted by analyst Hideki Yasuda, from Toyo Securities, who commented to Reuters that it is not advisable to “divert attention from a console that arrives in the middle of the critical end-of-year shopping season”, referring of course to the increasingly approaching Christmas, which will be the swan song of the first generation of Switch.
The statements by the head of Nintendo have occurred on the occasion of the announcement of the financial results for the last quarter, which have shown a physiological decline in sales of a console that is eight years old, but that has already exceeded 164 million units. The Switch 2 is expected to have a larger and better defined screen, more graphical power and joy-con magnetic. There will, however, be no AI-based features on board, a buzzword of the moment that Nintendo is not interested in.
Switch 2 will be backward compatible with the games from the first Switch
The second important confirmation has to do with the backward compatibility of the second Switch with games from the firstas specified by the president of Nintendo. Without a doubt, this is great news for the many fans of the Japanese brand, since it is more than likely that a large part of them will update to the latest version from the previous one and, therefore, will be able to take their collection of acquired titles with them until that moment. Therefore, it is likely that the Switch 2 will continue to include the cartridge player, while it seems a more remote possibility that the device will end up being limited to downloads.
