At the end of last February Nintendo sued Tropic Haze, the company behind the Nintendo Switch emulator Yuzu. Many thought that both companies would fight a legal battle… but that was not the case and the second reached an agreement on March 4.
In this way, Tropic Haze agreed to pay Mario's owners $2.4 million in damages. But it is not the only thing, since the development of this software will also officially cease.
Likewise, it will no longer be available online and its website, yuzu-emu.org, will now be owned by Nintendo. For many this is an admission of defeat on the part of those responsible for Yuzu. But things could have been much worse for them.
We recommend: Nintendo Switch 2 delayed its release until 2025 to have enough consoles, according to reports.
All because it was possible that part or all of the losses caused by illegal digital downloads of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom before your departure.
We're talking tens of millions of dollars. It is likely that Tropic Haze's attorney or legal counsel, after examining Nintendo's lawsuit, concluded that he had no point fighting.
In other words, this console manufacturer had the upper hand. The company argued that Yuzu's technology illegally circumvented the encryption of its video game software and facilitated piracy. But there is something else.
Yuzu having a Patreon account suggested that he was profiting from the piracy of Nintendo titles. Without leaving aside that on his Discord server there were mentions about using the emulator with The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.
It is still necessary for the judge in charge to accept the agreement signed by both companies but it seems that there will be no changes. This is how this publisher and developer achieves a victory.
