Nigeria | Police release 77 people from Nigerian church who were waiting for the second coming of Jesus – being investigated as a mass kidnapping

According to the police spokesperson, people were waiting for the second coming of Jesus in the church of the Pentecostal congregation.

Police raided the church after a mother said she suspected her children were behind bars.

The pastor of the Pentecostal church and his assistants have been arrested, and those released from the church have been taken into the custody of the authorities.

The assistant pastor of the congregation had said that the ardently awaited return of Jesus would take place in April, but later changed the date to September.

In the raid, the police released 26 children, eight teenagers and 43 adults from the church premises.

Nigeria Christians have not had an easy time, because at the beginning of June, at least 50 people were killed in a mass shooting and bombing aimed at the Catholic Church of St. Francis in the city of Owo.

Islamist rebels in Nigeria are suspected of the attack.
