Another is the Seattle Seahawks, who played the very first NFL game on German soil against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. That was about a year and a half ago. And the Seahawks are still looking for ways to make the sport better known and promote it in this country.
For this purpose, a delegation will travel to Düsseldorf this Saturday. Jim Tomsula, who worked in the NFL for many years and is now head coach at Rhein Fire in the European League of Football, revealed this at a media round on Thursday. The five people from Seattle will stay in the region until Wednesday to take part in small events and hold some meetings with Rhein Fire.
What exactly is it about? According to Tomsula, that is not yet clear: “They are interested in what is going on here and how exciting it is. They want to talk about it and see if they can get involved.”
Other NFL teams have done this: The New England Patriots held a “Football Development Weekend” in Düsseldorf in March and also announced that they would be moving to the district sports facilitye invest in Düsseldorf-Garath so that two new playing fields can be built there.
The Patriots already have a solid project, the NFL has its German headquarters in the state capital of North Rhine-Westphalia and the Seahawks are now looking at whether and how they can get involved in the region.
The Seahawks also want to take this opportunity to watch football and get an idea of the enthusiasm in the stadium: The NFL team delegation will also be present at the Rhein Fire’s season opener against the Cologne Centurions in Aachen (Sunday, 1 p.m.).
