On 29 July, the day on which Formula 1 will be engaged with free practice for the Hungarian Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso will celebrate his 41 years of age, which will automatically make him one of the longest-running drivers in the history of this sport. The Spaniard, who returned to the top flight last season after three years of absence, is at the same time one of F1’s most loved and talented protagonists, as evidenced by the two consecutive world titles won in 2005 and 2006.
However, also due to a certain sporting misfortune, the Asturian has never been able to express himself at 100% since his return, while still showing flashes of genius such as the front row won in qualifying in Montreal in the rain or on 3 Th place in Qatar obtained in 2021. In any case, Alonso never managed to seriously enter the fight for the victory, contrary to the expectations that the number 14 had set himself once he returned to Formula 1.
Precisely for this reason, the former Ferrari driver criticized the reality of the current Circus which, according to him, would preclude the possibility of getting on the top step for all the drivers, except for two teams: “Unfortunately Formula 1 is still very predictable and boring – said a NOS – everything revolves around Red Bull and Ferrari: only Max Verstappen, Charles Leclerc, Carlos Sainz and Sergio Pérez they can win. Of course it’s a good feeling when I manage to shine, like in Canada when I started alongside Max in the front row, but the real chances of success are tied to the budget cap, which all teams must respect. It’s up to me and the Alpine to make this happen ”.
