The electric car market is not taking off and with sales not bringing the expected results, European car manufacturers are worried about the next steps of the transition towards sustainable mobility imposed by the European Union. In particular, Acea, the association of manufacturers of the Old Continent, has formalized the appeal to the EU that had been anticipated in recent days by the president Luca de Meo, requesting to postpone the new limits for emissions from 2025 to 2027.
Acea’s fears over new emission limits
“The contraction of the electric market in Europe is an extremely worrying signal for industry and politics”we read in the note released by Acea. “We ask the institutions for urgent measures to support the sector, before the CO2 targets for cars and vans come into force in 2025. The European car industry has always supported the Paris Agreement and the objectives of the transport decarbonisation plan for 2050, investing billions in the electrification processes of the sector. Today, technology and the availability of zero-emission cars are no longer a bottleneck: we are doing our part in this transition process, but unfortunately other elements necessary for this systemic change are not yet present”.
Immediate action
The concern of European manufacturers is also caused by the loss of competitiveness of Europe, with the need to act immediately. A concern that has also been further exacerbated by Mario Draghi’s report on EU competitiveness in which a lack of long-term strategies is highlighted: “The industry cannot afford to wait for the revision of the CO2 regulations planned for 2026 and 2027, we need urgent and impactful actions immediately, which will reverse the negative trend, restore competitiveness to Europe and reduce strategic weaknesses”.
