New Caledonia said “no” to the referendum on independence from France. This is what emerges from the first partial results of the third and last referendum held in the French archipelago and envisaged by the 1998 decolonization agreement. The vote was characterized by a record abstention also due to the boycott of the independence parties.
The “No”, recorded on 84% of the ballots polled, won with 96%. At the two previous referendums organized in the framework of the Numea agreement, the “no” promoted by the loyalists had won, in 2018 with 56.7% of the preferences and in 2020 with 53.3%.
