Netflix, not just TV series-films: now sport. “Live streaming matches”
Films and TV series: the Netflix formula is increasingly enriched with live sporting events. A turning point for the app. Vice President Spencer Wang underlined that the platform does not think so much about “making a large investment in sport”, but rather about expanding its catalog with unique events capable of generating audiences. This is why the rights to at least four games of the professional American football championship NFL have been taken.
Netflix arrives in live sports with 4 NFL Christmas games
Netflix will broadcast two games on Christmas Day 2024 – with the Kansas City Chiefs vs. the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Houston Texans vs. the Baltimore Ravens – and at least one game on the same date in 2025 and 2026. An investment that, according to the Wall Street Journal, will cost 75 million dollars to broadcast each of the two games this year. On the other hand, American football in the USA is an all-encompassing phenomenon on a media level: 39 of the 50 best spectator results for 2023 in the country were achieved by NFL games.
Netflix in sport: from Nadal-Alcaraz to wrestling
Not just American football. Netflix’s interest in sports is growing In addition to docuseries (Drive to survive’ on Formula 1, ‘Break point’ on tennis and ‘Tour de France: at the heart of the peloton’ on cycling) here are some ad hoc events. From the golf Netflix Cup, to the recent tennis performance (March 4) between Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz (Netflix Slam). Without forgetting that on July 20 the platform will broadcast the match between the ring legend Mike Tyson and the boxer and YouTuber Jake Paul. And it should also be remembered that in January Netflix signed a ten-year broadcast agreement with American professional wrestling league WWE, for 5 billion dollars. And who knows, maybe in the future it will also enter Europe with football…
