The foray of Netflix in gaming it has left many confused, but also curious. The potential of a Netflix-operated gaming subscription service is undeniably compelling, if only for the size and influence of the company.
So far, the Netflix gaming service has yet to live up to its potential, but the company is making it clear that this is just the beginning of its plans. In its latest quarterly earnings Q&A session, Netflix says it expects its gaming service to be “best-in-class”.
The answer came from Netflix’s CEO Reed Hastings, who was asked how Netflix plans to approach its long-term gaming content. According to Hastings, the company must be “otherwise outstanding” in its gambling endeavors and that it “just doesn’t make sense to be there.” In other words, Netflix needs to stand out with its endeavors, rather than just being another product that other companies may already be doing better.
However, Hastings acknowledges that Netflix hasn’t yet shown what it’s capable of. The goal is to start small – the company is clearly setting high expectations for its gaming service going forward.
“Since launch, we’ve released five more games, bringing the total to ten for 2021. We’re still early days, but we’re happy with our progress. In 2022, we will expand our game portfolio for both casual and basic games as we continue to program a wide range of game types to learn what our members enjoy the most.“said the CEO.
