The Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahureproached Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for the doubts he expressed about the possibility that all war objectives could be achieved through military pressure and reminded him that “are determined by the Cabinet.”
“The letter (referring to the statements) from Gallant is extremely disconcerting. There is a compass and they are the objectives of the war determined by the Cabinet, which are constantly tested and have even been expanded,” says a statement from the Israeli president’s office.
The head of Defense, in a speech given at a tribute held this Sunday for the soldiers who fell in the attacks of October 7, stressed that the return home of the almost a hundred hostages still in Gaza cannot be achieved through of military pressure and that will require carrying out “painful compromises.”
“We must do it for the hostages, for their families, for the soldiers who fell for this objective, by the Army’s legal“Gallant added.
The Israeli Government established four main objectives in its offensive in Gaza and Lebanon: dismantle Hamas’ military and government capabilities; the return home of the hostages; that Gaza does not pose a threat to Israel and the return of the more than 80,000 evacuees from northern Israel.
This Sunday, the president of Egypt, Abdel Fattah al Sisi, announced that his country has proposed implement a 48-hour ceasefire in Gaza in which the Islamist group Hamas frees four Israeli hostages in exchange for the release of an undetermined number of Palestinian prisoners.
Al Sisi made this announcement on the same day that the head of the Mossad, David Barnea, arrived in Qatar to participate in new negotiations on hostage exchange by Palestinian prisoners imprisoned in Israel and the possibilities of reaching a ceasefire in Gaza.
The new talks take place after the eleventh tour of the Middle East since the start of the war in Gaza by the US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, who has asked to take advantage the death of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, to resume negotiations and end the war.
The hostages’ relatives have been asking Netanyahu for months to prioritize signing a truce agreement with Hamas that allows the release of their loved ones, after more than a year of captivity and without having the guarantee that the troops can rescue them.
