Netanyahu: IDF operation in Rafah aims to destroy Hamas
The goal of the Israel Defense Forces’ (IDF) operation in Rafah is to destroy the Palestinian radical group Hamas and free the hostages. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said this; his words were published on website government office.
“Entering Rafah has two main military goals: the return of our abductees and the destruction of Hamas,” the politician said.
Netanyahu added that Hamas’s previously announced truce proposals “were aimed at disrupting the entry of the Israeli army.” In his opinion, the opinions of the two sides on the terms of the compromise are too different from each other, so Tel Aviv is putting military pressure on the group.
The prime minister summarized that Israel will not allow Hamas to restore its “criminal rule” in Gaza, and also identified the capture of the Rafah checkpoint as the key goal of the operation in the city.
Earlier, the spokesman for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), Jens Laerke, said that Israel violated all five norms of international law during the evacuation of the Gaza Strip during the launch of the operation in Rafah. According to him, Tel Aviv has done nothing to ensure the safety of routes for refugees and their final destinations.
