Benjamin Netanyahu has taken advantage of election day in the United States to announce the dismissal of his Defense Minister, Yoav Gallantdue to a “crisis of confidence” that “has been growing gradually.” The decision comes after 13 months of war in Gaza and Lebanon and on the verge of a new attack by Iran, which claimed revenge after the first Israeli aircraft operation in the Islamic republic.
The prime minister made the announcement with a video message in which he began by saying: “My supreme commitment (…) is to safeguard the security of Israel and lead us to absolute victory.” The friction with Gallant has been frequent since the start of the war in Gaza and in March his departure from the Ministry was about to be completed after a dispute at the expense of the reform of the judicial system.
The dismissal will be carried out within 48 hours and Netanyahu has offered the position to Israel Katzcurrent head of Foreign Affairs, a portfolio that would be occupied by Gideon Saar. The first member of the cabinet to react was the Minister of National Security, Itamar Ben Gvir, who applauded the decision, because with Gallant “it is impossible to achieve absolute victory.”
The ultra-Orthodox partners of the ultra-radical Government headed by Netanyahu also welcome this decision that eliminates from the scene a Gallant who opposed the exemption from military service for Haredi youth.
«In the middle of a war, more than ever, full trust is required between the Prime Minister and the Minister of Defense (…) Although in the first months of the campaign there was very productive work, In recent months it has eroded», Netanyahu detailed in a statement issued by his office.
For his part, former Minister Gallant has published a brief message on his official profile on the social network “the security of the State of Israel was and will be” its main “mission” in life.
