The residents of La Palma have been waking up at dawn for a week to the smell of burning and the sound of sirens because there are already a dozen containers on fire in the town.
The main stage is Antonio Serrano Street, where the Casa del Folklore is located, in the heart of the urban center. The last incident occurred during the early hours of Tuesday: six containers burned, around two in the morning. Paradoxically, three of those who set fire had been installed the day before to replace six others that also burned on two different nights last week.
Antonio Serrano Street is long and crosses a good part of the town, so there are several containers for throwing garbage located in different sections. Just a few weeks ago, in front of the Casa del Folklore, in Manuel Zamora Square, some asphalt work was completed. The pavement already shows damage with the remains of the plastic that have solidified and melted the agglomerate.
The Local Police will reinforce the presence of patrols in the area to stop this new wave of uncivil attacks
All the fires were put out by the members of the Fire Fighting and Rescue Service of the Cartagena City Council. According to the residents of the county council, no one saw the perpetrators, making identification by the Civil Guard and the Local Police, who are already attentive to this situation, more complicated.
According to neighborhood sources, these acts of vandalism have caused many residents to feel fear. They stated that they are worried about going out alone at night. A municipal spokesperson said he was aware of only three container fires on La Palma and described what happened as “something specific.”
The Aljorra
This same situation occurred in La Aljorra a week ago. Six others burned there. The Local Police reinforced their services in the county council and have stopped intentional fires.
Now the efforts of municipal agents will focus on ending this new wave of vandalism that is shaking La Palma and avoiding possible contagion effects on other councils in the northern area of Cartagena.
In addition to the burning of containers, residents of La Aljorra reported small thefts in broad daylight and on busy streets, breaking windows in parked vehicles in search of valuable objects inside, as well as attempts to steal fuel from trucks.
In La Aljorra, the last acts of vandalism took place during the early hours of last Saturday. According to residents of this district, several young people set fire to half a dozen garbage containers located on Alonso Pineda, Camino del Cementerio and San Rafael streets. The fires were put out by Cartagena firefighters.
The burning of containers cost the Cartagena City Council 92,000 euros last year. For MC councilor Antonia Pérez, who is a resident of La Palma, she demanded more police presence in both towns to stop the wave of vandalism.
Each new container costs 200 euros to the City Council
The burning of containers cost the municipal coffers 92,000 euros last year. The destruction and burning of this type of containers affected 178 buckets spread across different areas of the city, neighborhoods and councils. Those that register the most damage are organic, followed by cardboard and packaging. When one burns, the municipal cleaning service workers proceed to clean the place and replace the containers. Each of them has a price of two hundred euros.
