The Brazilian Navy will send this Wednesday, the 8th, the largest warship in Latin America to support the population of Rio Grande do Sul who are facing their worst climate tragedy in history. This is the Multipurpose Aircraft Ship (NAM) “Atlântico”, the largest ship in the Naval Force. In addition to it, which will leave the Ilha das Cobras Naval Base in Rio de Janeiro and be sent to the municipality of Rio Grande, other vessels will also collaborate to send donations and supplies.
“With an organization similar to a war operation, the Navy is mobilizing four ships, 20 vessels, 12 aircraft and hundreds of soldiers. The situation is similar to the response given, in February last year, to the strong storms that hit the north coast of SP, especially in São Sebastião”, he states, in a statement.
Understand the capacity of the structure
The NAM “Atlântico” will transport two mobile water treatment stations, capable of producing a total of 20,000 liters of drinking water per hour, in order to meet part of the demand in cities that have suffered from shortages since the dams broke. It will also have vessels, equipment, fuel, supplies and various health professionals.
“To assist in rescuing stranded victims and transporting supplies through flooded waterways, the “Atlântico” will take eight medium and small vessels, which, added to the eight boats in use in the State since April 30, will increase the contingent of aquatic resources made available by the Navy”, he added.
The ship, current Flagship of the Squadron, is designed for the tasks of controlling maritime areas, projecting power over land, sea and air. It is also suitable for humanitarian missions, aiding victims of natural disasters, and evacuation, according to the Navy.
Other fronts of action
The Navy is also organizing the dispatch of the Oceanic Support Ship “Mearim” and the Oceanic Patrol Ship “Amazonas”, equipped with three small vessels, which will head to Rio Grande do Sul this Tuesday, 7th.
The Frigate “Defensora”, which will transport donations and supplies, should also leave on Wednesday.
With the arrival of the ships, the work of the Navy’s air rescue teams will be reinforced by eight more aircraft, in addition to the four that remain on standby in the State.
“There will be twelve helicopters, in total, in a continuous effort to rescue residents stranded in areas that are difficult to access,” said the Navy, citing that 40 vehicles and 200 marine soldiers are also being sent to clear access roads, in addition to health support teams, made up of doctors and nurses.
