Last October it was successfully completed the first barge crash test for the F110 Programwhich will allow the shock qualification of the diesel generator, main electrical panel and fuel purifier equipment that will be installed on the frigates that Navantia is currently building for the Navy in the Ferrol shipyard.
The shipping company explains that passing these demanding tests, which subject the equipment to operation to three underwater detonations of incremental severityrepresents a historical milestone for Navantia, as it is the first time which coordinates the execution of this type of tests.
A premiere for Navantia Motorsdue to the crash rating equivalent to the MIL standard of the Navantia-MTU20V4000 “encapsulated” diesel generated, with 100% Navantia Motores design and manufacturing, this being currently the only alternative with these characteristics in the NATO environment; and for the F110 Program, due to the relevance of the qualified equipment, which is part of the electrical and propulsion plants of the ships.
The tests were carried out on the “Shock Test Vehicle STV02” barge that the company Thornton Tomasetti Defense Ltd (TTDL) uses this type of crash testing at the Limehilock facility (Scotland). The work team included representatives from Navantia and TTDL. The manufacturers of the tested equipment joined in: Navantia Motores, along with RollsRoyce (MTU) and Alconza, for the diesel generator; Elinsa for the main electrical panel; and GEA Westfalia for the fuel purifier.
There were also representatives from Defense, from the F110 Program Office of the General Directorate of Armament and Material (DGAM), from the North American Element (formerly NTS), which acts as a third party for Defense, guaranteeing the correlation between the test developed in Scotland and the one that would be developed in the USA, and a Canadian technologist, who has been advising Navantia on vulnerability issues for more than 25 years. .
Assembly and disassembly
The Navantia and TTDL teams continue working on the disassembly of the barge’s equipment, already crash-rated, and on the assembly of the following equipment, the electric propulsion motor and its frequency converter, which will be crash tested on the barge. STV02 at the end of November.
