According to NATO, two Russian fighter jets flew very close to NATO ships in the Baltic Sea on Thursday.
NATO announced on Friday that two Russian destroyers made a dangerous and unprofessional approach towards coalition ships in the Baltic Sea. This is reported by the news agency AFP.
NATO says in its announcementthat the fighter pilots did not answer the questions of its troops and made an overflight from an altitude of about 91 meters and 73 meters away from its ships.
“NATO considers the operation to be dangerous and unprofessional, as it was carried out in a danger area that was reserved for an air defense exercise, and because of the height and proximity of the aircraft. The interaction increased the risk of miscalculations, errors and accidents,” the NATO press release says.
According to the Defense League, its own forces acted responsibly in the situation and performed the task in accordance with international air and sea regulations. NATO says it responds appropriately to any disruption to ensure the safety of its aircraft, ships and troops.
“NATO is not looking for a confrontation or a threat,” the release states.
NATO and AFP do not say in more detail where in the Baltic Sea the incident happened.
AFP according to NATO has doubled its presence in the Baltic Sea and the North Sea after leaks were found in the gas pipelines leading from Russia to Europe.
The news agency says that NATO’s forces in the Baltic Sea include Dutch, Norwegian and Danish ships that have cooperated with Sweden and Finland, which are seeking a defense alliance.
