NATO leaders are discussing the possibility of holding an extraordinary meeting in Brussels next week. This was announced on March 14 by the CNBC TV channel, citing US and European officials.
According to channel sources, the final decision on holding the meeting has not yet been made.
US leader Joe Biden is expected to attend the summit. The US President himself has not yet announced an imminent trip to Europe.
The agenda of the meeting has not been released.
Earlier in the day, a White House spokeswoman also told reporters that the American leader had no plans to travel to meet European partners anytime soon.
The previous NATO meeting took place on 5 March. As President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky said following its results, she was weak and confused due to the alliance’s refusal to close the sky over the country.
In addition, the Ukrainian leader expressed doubt that NATO could protect anyone, including the countries of the alliance.
On March 4, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg announced that he would not introduce a no-fly zone over Ukraine.
According to him, NATO cannot make a no-fly zone over Ukraine, as this could lead to a full-scale war in Europe, in which many more countries will participate.
On February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a special operation to protect the civilian population of Donbass. Then the press secretary of the President Dmitry Peskov clarified that the special operation had two goals – the demilitarization and denazification of Ukraine. He pointed out that both of these aspects pose a threat to the Russian state and people.
On February 21, Putin signed decrees recognizing the independence of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics (DNR and LNR). Also, the President of the Russian Federation and the heads of both republics Leonid Pasechnik and Denis Pushilin signed treaties of friendship, cooperation and mutual assistance, including military assistance.
The head of state made the relevant decisions against the backdrop of the aggravation of the situation in Donbass that began on February 17. The DPR and LPR reported heavy shelling by Ukrainian security forces, including from heavy weapons. The republics announced a general mobilization and evacuation of civilians to the territory of Russia.
