Stoltenberg: NATO may apply Article 5 of the treaty in the event of a cyber attack
NATO may invoke Article 5 of collective defense in the event of a serious cyber attack on one of the countries stated Alliance Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg in an interview with The Economist.
As the Secretary General noted, he will warn Moscow about the possibility of using Article 5 if the cyber attacks are “serious.” “We can invoke Article 5 and respond in cyberspace, as well as in other areas, to protect NATO allies,” he admitted.
Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty states that an armed attack on one NATO member country will be considered an attack on the alliance as a whole.
Earlier, the scientific department of the German Bundestag reported that a strike on the troops of one of the NATO countries in Ukraine would not lead to a collective response from the entire North Atlantic Pact in accordance with Article 5 of the Alliance Charter.
