The German national soccer team meets Italy in the quarter-finals of the Nations League. This resulted in the draw for the first knockout round of the UEFA competition in Nyon. The first leg will be played by national coach Julian Nagelsmann on March 20th in Italy. The decision about moving into the next round will be made at the home game on March 23rd. The DFB has not yet decided on the venue for the second leg.
“I’m looking forward to it, they’re a great opponent,” said Nagelsmann after the draw. It is “always good” for the team’s development to “compete with the best teams. We hope that we get to the semi-finals.” The chances of this are “generally good”. The Squadra Azzurra won the European Championship title in 2021 and came third in the Nations League in 2023, but the team recently disappointed with an exit in the round of 16 of the European Championship in Germany.
Nagelmann’s goal is to reach the final tournament from June 4th to 8th. Then the successor to the reigning Nations League champion Spain will be chosen in the semi-finals and final. Germany would first face the winner of the game between Denmark and Portugal. The DFB has applied to host the mini-tournament.
Germany confidently qualified for the quarter-finals as group winners with four wins and two draws. Italy finished second in their group behind France. Most recently, the DFB team won 5-2 against Italy in the group phase of the 2022 Nations League and played 1-1.
