Analysts Segal and Komarov said that Europe cannot abandon Russian uranium
First Vice-President of Opora Rossii Pavel Sigal and Candidate of Political Sciences, Dean of the Faculty of Public Administration of Synergy University Sergey Komarov in an interview with Ura.ru called reason for Europe’s lack of opportunity to abandon Russian uranium in the near future. According to analysts, this will not be possible due to long-term contracts, as well as the presence of Soviet-type nuclear power units, the fuel for which is produced and supplied by Moscow.
“Russia is one of the powerful players in this market, and therefore, attempts to introduce any restrictive measures will lead to the same thing that happened with oil, when the flows are simply redirected to other markets,” Segal said.
He clarified that Russia has been building up technologies and infrastructure in this area for decades, so European countries will not be able to easily find an alternative supplier.
Komarov, in turn, added that no matter how much Western countries would like to find an alternative to Russian uranium, deliveries under long-term contracts will stretch for years, since they use Soviet-designed power units and are highly dependent on supplies from Russia.
Earlier, the United States said that Eastern European countries that buy Russian enriched uranium for their nuclear power plants are trying to find new suppliers.
