Julian Alaphilippe won stage 12 of the Italy spin, which took place between Martinsicuro and Fano, of 193 kilometers, with several mountain passes of lesser category, in which Nairo Quintana was the main protagonist, Tadej Pogacar kept the lead and Daniel Martínez and Einer Rubio defended their positions in the general classification.
Quintana was part of the great escape of the day, in which a fairly large group broke away from the main group in search of partial victory, points in the promotion steps and moving up in the general classification.
Great job
In addition to Quintana, Jonathan Narváez, Matteo Trentin, Filippo Ganna, Rubén Fernández, Juan Pedro López, Attila Valter among others, those who had their party.
Back, in the leading lot, everything was calm, although in the first moments of the escape the nerves took over the runners, since they could not let a strong rival go.
The large group split into several parts and from there Alaphilippe and Mirco Maestri took the advantage, who were the protagonists of the day, those in charge of opening the way for the faction.
That pair of cyclists, the heroes of the faction, had a tremendous ride. Nairo arrived at the Giro with the option of fighting for a partial victory and to help Rubio obtain a good classification, something he has fought for.
In the first part of the race he suffered from a pollen allergy, which affected him, but apparently this Thursday he recovered.
Nairo Quintana fought in the breakaway, tried to get ahead, but did not achieve the goal of winning.
The day was in no way a transition, at the back in the final part the leaders moved and he managed to see a cut in which Martínez was not, but in the end he connected again. Nairo was caught up by the group, as well as the other escapees.
“Alaphilippe left his dance partner behind with 11.5 kilometers to go on the last climb and then resisted the pressure of the pursuers, the Ecuadorian Jhonatan Narváez and the Belgian Quinten Hermans, who reached about thirty seconds behind,” said the AFP agency.
And he added: “For the Frenchman, who competes in his first Giro at the age of 31, this victory, the 42nd of his career, serves as a rebirth after several difficult months, and even years.”
The AFP information says: “Weighed down by falls, injuries and even controversies with his boss Patrick Lefevere, he raised his arms again in a country where he is good at, where he achieved several of his most prestigious victories, such as Milan -San Remo and the Strade Bianche in 2019, as well as the Imola World Championships in 2020.”
The Giro d’Italia enters the final part of the second week of competition and the riders do their work with their minds set on the time trial this Saturday31 kilometers, and the stage with a high finish on Sunday, with the passage through Mortirolo in between.
This Friday, Riccione and Cento, 179 kilometers, on flat terrain.
