The artistic director of the Mikhailovsky Theater ballet presented in St. Petersburg the premiere of the play Hidalgo from La Mancha, his version of the ballet Don Quixote, where for the first time an unusual image of the title character is given, the press service of the theater told Izvestia.
“At the center of the performance to the music of Ludwig Minkus is the love story of a young Spaniard Quiteria and a poor peasant Basilio in love with her, who are forced to fight for their happiness. However, for the first time in the history of choreographic interpretations of the famous work, Don Quixote will turn from a mimic character, only formally combining ballet episodes, into a full-fledged character, ”the press service said.
One of the main contemporary choreographers, Nacho Duato, continues to work in St. Petersburg as artistic director of the Mikhailovsky Theater ballet troupe. During this time he has carried out more than a dozen productions, including the October premiere.
The artistic director of the theater, Vladimir Kekhman, announced the production of this performance at the end of February of this year, when foreign cultural figures were leaving Russia en masse.
Nacho Duato not only remained in charge of the ballet troupe, but also staged Hidalgo from La Mancha, thus completing the top five great Russian ballets. Previously, the choreographer staged The Sleeping Beauty, The Nutcracker, Swan Lake, La Bayadère.
