Mint Butterfield, daughter of the co-founders of the Slack and Flickr platforms, has been missing for at least four days in Silicon Valley, California. The disappearance of the 16-year-old heiress, how confirmed yesterday by the Marin County Sheriff's Office, was reported on Monday, April 22 by her parents, Stewart Butterfield and Caterina Fake, but the girl was last seen at her mother's home in Bolinas late in the evening of the previous day.
“On April 22, at approximately 09.02, a call came into our Communications Center regarding a 16-year-old missing person, identified as Mint Butterfield. Her mother, Caterina Fake, reported Mint missing. Fake had last seen her daughter around 10pm on April 21 at their home in Bolinas,” the sheriff's office said.
Police are treating the case as a “voluntary removal.” “The following morning, Fake realized that Mint was not home and discovered a note indicating that the girl had left the residence, with a suitcase, at an unknown time during the night or early morning. It is unclear how Mint left the area, as she did not have access to either a vehicle or a telephone.”
“At this time, we have no information to believe that Mint was forced to leave against her will,” police said. “The sheriff's office considers Mint to be a voluntarily missing child, 'at risk' due to a prior suicide threat.”
The young woman, about five feet tall and weighing approximately 45 kilos, could be traveling to San Francisco. “Fake and Mint also share a home in San Francisco and it is believed, based on Fake's statements, that Mint may have left for the Tenderloin neighborhood of San Francisco,” the cops said. However, despite the collaboration of the authorities of the Californian city, the young girl has not yet been found.
Mint, a girl with curly brown, reddish hair and bushy eyebrows, was last seen wearing a black sweatshirt, flannel pajama pants and black boots. According to the police, she may be in possession of a gray suitcase. Her parents are waiting for her return. The authorities released a photo of the girl to contribute to the search.
“Unfortunately, misinformation has been spread through social media and other media outlets regarding potential accomplices or people who may know Mint's whereabouts,” the cops warned. “Furthermore, several telephone numbers have been published to call for information. Instead, we ask that any information regarding Mint's whereabouts be directed to the Marin County Sheriff's Office at (415) 479-2311 or email [email protected].”
Father Stewart Butterfield, a Canadian businessman, and mother Caterina Fake co-founded media sharing portal Flickr in 2004 before selling it to Yahoo the following year. They then co-founded the messaging app Slack in 2013. Second Forbesthe Big Tech billionaire couple has a net worth of $1.6 billion.
