My Hero Academia is a series full of references to popular culture. Although in the anime this is not so noticeable, since several elements are eliminated or substituted to avoid copyright problems, in the manga we can constantly appreciate some of the likes of Kōhei Horikoshi, its author. Thus, recently we could see a clear reference to Star Wars.
During chapter 370 of the manga, Spinner, one of the members of the League of Villains, led an attack made up of 10,000 villains with some kind of mutation. Interestingly, it was revealed that in the past, this group of people were purged from society in an event known as “the 6/6 incident.”
You’ve probably already noticed, but this is a reference to Star Wars Order 66, where Jedi were killed throughout the galaxy. Horikoshi is trying to make it clear that the mutant community in the world of My Hero Academia has been suppressed in the past and, for many of these, the war that All for One started is the perfect opportunity to take revenge.
Fortunately, not all mutants want the blood of heroes, as Shoji, one of 1-A’s students, and who also has a quirk that has mutated his appearance, positions itself to be the line of defense this battlefield needs. On related topics, the anime’s Blu-ray has spoilers for the new season. Similarly, this is the meaning of the Shigaraki armor.
Editor’s note:
It is interesting to see what kind of references Horikoshi hides in My Hero Academia. We’ve seen Spider-Man and Chainsaw Man in the past, and the Star Wars reference is something that even various unofficial translations localized as literally Order 66.
