A truly fiery season finale is expected for MXGP, with Tim Gajser returning to victory in the German Grand Prix, taking back the red plate by just two points against Jeffrey Herlings. And with seven races from the end, everything is still really wide open, given that the first four are all enclosed in the space of just 31 lengths.
The Slovenian of Honda had suffered in recent weeks, due to a fracture to his left collarbone remedied in training, but in Teutschental he showed up again polished and won a really important specific weight success.
In the first stage he had to be content with finishing third, only being a spectator in the great duel between the two KTMs of Jorge Prado and Jeffrey Herlings, which, however, in a certain sense then made it easier for him in Race 2. The Spaniard and the Dutch if they are given with great reason to the finish line, which they crossed separated by only 143 thousandths, but arriving at the contact on the final jump.
In the clash, the Iberian driver took a rather strong blow to the arm and therefore, despite the success of the first heat, he preferred not to show up at the starting gate in the second. Herlings, on the other hand, was more stoic and decided to run, even if he wasn’t at 100% and probably it has also been seen.
Race 2 was in fact a duel between Gajser and Romain Febvre, with the Kawasaki Frenchman good at putting himself in front of the opening of the gate, even managing to stay there for a good part of the race. On lap 12, however, he could not do anything to resist the attack of the reigning world champion, who in this way took both the victory of the heats and the top step of the podium, as well as, as mentioned, the Red Table .
But be careful not to make the mistake of underestimating Febvre, because the French driver is still only 8 points from the top. Thanks also to the absence in Race 2, Prado saw his gap rise to 31 points, while Tony Cairoli now seems to have been permanently cut off from the fight for the title. The Italian driver was unable to do better than seventh place in Germany, finishing fifth in the first stage and only ninth in the second. His gap is now 58 points.
MX2: Renaux returns to victory and extends his hands on the World Championship
If there were still doubts about it, Maxime Renaux has further stretched his hands towards the MX2 title in Germany, returning to the top step of the podium. The Yamaha rider shared the day’s victories with fellow countryman Tom Vialle, but in the end he prevailed over his rival KTM as he won the second half.
Not only did Renaux win, but he was able to take advantage of a Sunday that was not particularly brilliant for his rivals: after the two races in Teutschental, his direct rival became the Belgian Jago Geerts, despite falling off the podium in favor of Rene Hofer. However, his lead in the standings reached 85 points.
Unfortunately, Mattia Guadagnini still loses strokes: the KTM Italian experienced a difficult race 1 even remaining out of the top 10 and then finished tenth in Race 2. Results that allowed Geerts to overtake him in the world championship standings by 12 points. And now even the final podium is at risk, because the wild Vialle is only 29 points away in fifth position (among them there is also Jed Beaton, fifth in Germany).
