Municipalities expect to receive two percent more income from levies such as property tax and tourist tax in the coming year. This is apparent from an analysis of municipal budgets carried out by Statistics Netherlands (CBS) on Thursday. In total, municipalities are counting on 11.5 billion euros in tax revenues.
The waste levy, sewerage levy and property tax together account for more than three quarters of municipal tax revenues: 8.8 billion euros. The budgeted revenue from the sewerage tax is remarkably higher than in previous years, mainly because of the increased costs of maintenance and management of the sewage system. Budgeted real estate tax revenues are 0.4 percent higher than the average for the past ten years, partly due to changes in real estate values.
Income from the precario tax, a levy on the use of municipal land, is expected to fall by more than 85 percent in 2022. A new law will come into effect this year that will no longer allow municipalities to tax utilities for running cables and pipelines through or over public land. The income from tourist tax will recover slightly this year, municipalities expect, to 377 million. Last year, municipalities budgeted 68 million euros less income from tourism tax than the year before due to the corona measures.
