There are a total of about 46,000 pupils in basic education in Helsinki.
“We do not think we have the staff to teach safely and to meet the goals and objectives set for it,” says Director of Education. Satu Järvenkallas.
The Chamber under the City Education and Training Board will decide on the matter at its extraordinary meeting on Wednesday.
At the moment, it also seems that a large part of Helsinki’s kindergartens are closed during a possible strike. Early childhood education has already collected information on the kind of childcare needs of carers and the number of employees in the city’s day care centers during the strike week.
“The view is such that [päiväkotien] there will be a lot of closures, ”says Järvenkallas.
At its meeting on Tuesday, the Helsinki Board of Education and Training will also discuss the possibilities of reimbursing early childhood education fees during the industrial action.
The city is due to provide more information on the impact of the strike on the operation of schools and kindergartens on Wednesday.
In Vantaa pre-primary and pre-primary education is planned to be suspended altogether during the strike. However, the deputy mayor may decide to arrange teaching in part or in full if there are enough employees on site to carry out the activity at the start of the strike.
The Vantaa Education and Learning Board will hold an extraordinary meeting on Tuesday evening to discuss the matter.
Director of Basic Education Ilkka Kalon according to high schools, the first day of strike is in distance education. It will then be assessed how the rest of the week can be implemented.
Most kindergartens are likely to be closed throughout the strike week, says Vantaa’s director of early childhood education Mikko Mäkelä. Where possible, some daycare centers are open.
Planning has been hampered by the fact that the city does not have information on how many employees will be involved in the strike.
“First and foremost, we hope that families will be able to arrange care in other ways these days,” says Mäkelä.
Vantaa plans to reimburse families for early childhood education fees on days when services cannot be provided.
In Espoo kindergartens and schools, including high schools, are completely closed at least on the first day of the strike, says the director of growth and learning Harri Rinta-Aho.
“We don’t know what the degree of involvement in the strike is. After the first day of the strike, we have an idea of how much labor we have available. After that, we will try to organize an early childhood education service in particular, as far as there are resources, ”he says.
Even in the event of a possible strike, statutory group sizes must be adhered to in early childhood education. This means that even if kindergartens open their doors, not all children can be admitted to kindergartens during a strike.
“We live in a country where everyone is treated equally, and we have no right to prioritize any customer groups. It’s a bit first come, first served, ”says Rinta-aho.
Almost all public sector organizations are taking part in the strike. According to Rinta-aho, it is also reflected in the challenges in terms of real estate services and especially school meals. It may not be possible to provide hot food to all students during the school days.
