MotoGP Mugello, the qualifying report
Jorge Martin conquers pole position at Mugello complete with track record (1:44.504) in a strange session, in which the best times arrive in the first part and not in the final assaults on the time. The Spaniard is practically unbeatable in T4, also thanks to a slipstream, and puts Francesco behind him Bagnaia for just 43 thousandths. The reigning world champion tries to distance himself from his rivals by making the lap very early but at the decisive moment his Ducati loses stability and forces him to a second place which in the race will become fifth due to the penalty inflicted yesterday by the Stewards Panel.
An excellent Maverick in the front row Viñales. The Aprilia rider finishes ahead of Marc Marquez, who crashed at the end in the Scarperia corner while he was clearly improving: it could have been a pole lap, also considering Martin’s slipstream, but his fall also prevents everyone else from improve. Hence the “frozen” times, with only Alex Marquez managing to recover three positions in the final: the Spaniard is eighth behind Bastianini, Morbidelli and Acosta, but ahead of Aleix Espargaró, Rins, Oliveira and Raul Fernandez.
Brad Binder and Fabio Di Giannantonio eliminated in Q1 (very unlucky, his time attacks best is ruined by the yellow flags), Fabio Quartararo and Marco Bezzecchi on the other VR46. They will start from 13th to 16th place, in that order.
