SAO PAULO (Reuters) – The soybean harvest in Mato Grosso this week recorded a weekly advance of 2.8 percentage points, reaching 4.16% of the area in the state, but the pace of work in the largest producer of the oilseed in the country is more slow compared to average, with many crops having the cycle lengthened by a sequence of cloudy days.
The historical average for the season is a harvest in 5.12% of soybean areas in the state, according to a report by the Mato Grosso Institute of Agricultural Economics (Imea) published this Friday.
After early and accelerated planting, some believed that the harvest could be advanced historically, which would guarantee a greater supply of the product at a time when few areas were harvested in the country.
“It was a little below average. We were expecting, because sowing was earlier, the areas were ready faster… but the cloudy weather has lengthened the cycle, added a few more days to the soybean cycle, cloudy December, cloudy January…” , Imea superintendent Cleiton Gauer told Reuters.
He also mentioned the problem of lack of desiccant for the harvest in some locations and even rainfall.
“It has been difficult to get into some areas. In addition, there are reports of lack of desiccants, so some producers are not able to desiccate the first areas, which is pushing the harvest curve forward”, he commented.
Mato Grosso, unlike the southern states where the harvest failed due to the drought, did not have relevant weather problems, and the expectation is for a great harvest.
“By the turn of the second half of January to the beginning of February, the harvest begins to gain strength in Mato Grosso with a large part of the areas getting ready for the harvest”, he added.
Imea, an agency linked to producers in the State, also pointed out that the harvest is much more advanced in relation to the total harvested until this time last year (0.80%), when the harvest was delayed after a slower planting due to the lack of of rains.
