On March 18, 2021, Rejected Games, a Polish software house led by Maciej Latocha, released on PC Mr. Prepper, survival title in which the player must build his bunker staff for escape to an imminent nuclear war. The game, which can remember Fallout Shelter (here some useful tips), in just three months it sold 164,000 copies, enjoying great success with audiences and critics. On December 10, 2021, Mr. Prepper makes its debut on Xbox and today you can read about it review. The exit on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 And Nintendo Switch it is instead scheduled for 2022.
Welcome to Murricaville, the former home of freedom
Mr. Prepper is set in the fictional town of Murricaville, a once peaceful location, where life was as peaceful as it was relaxing and where citizens lived in harmony with each other. This up to a sudden change of government that resulted Murricaville to pass from the homeland of freedom, a home of restrictions and respect for strict rules issued from above. Many have accepted these impositions with their heads down, but others are ready to fight to get out of these rigid rails. Mr. Prepper is just one of these fearless “warriors”, a citizen who after a attempt to leak ended badly, he will find himself on probation. Despite this, Prepper will not give up and will begin to build a bunker to survive a nuclear war that hangs in the air while organizing a daring plan to leave Murricaville.
There storytelling from Mr. Prepper it is one of the plus aspects interesting of the production. It will prove to be extremely current and well thought-out, also thanks to the interaction with some inhabitants of the town who will help us to implement our intricate escape plan. There is however a problem about to the evolution of the plot which inevitably binds to the type of game developed by Rejected Games. In fact, being a survival title strongly focused on crafting, accurate and systematic planning of the different activities to accomplish is as important as theirs implementation. Such mechanisms, as we will see in more detail, will take some time to execute and this slow and methodical gameplay, aimed at the accumulation of objects, raw materials and food, yes affects the rhythm narrative. All this makes the particularly slow progression of the story and the greatest risk is that of losing that desire for discovery necessary to complete a title that stands out, for a first time run, between fifteen and twenty hours of play.
The bunker of dreams
To build our clandestine fort we will have to have all kinds of materials, necessary for our survival. This will begin a process of accumulation of resources, such as glass, wood, metal and earth for growing vegetables, which we will get with the free exploration, trade and breakdown of household items. Whenever we have reached the right number of components, through the creation table we will be able to build everything necessary to make our underground shelter habitable.
The crafting it has proved to be solid and in continuous expansion. The options available to the player will become more and more numerous as we advance in-game, thus ensuring a wide “survival customization”. On the other hand, however, the brief initial tutorial did not prove to be exhaustive but rather superficial and it will often happen that you do not know what to do to complete some of the requests when the game is forwarded. The crafting then embraces, as mentioned, the component survival. Prepper, in fact, to survive will have to eat, sleep and above all have a level of “Preparation” appropriate. Preparation is essentially the energy required to create or disassemble objects and cultivate; more generally, gasoline, as well as food and rest, needed to make it to the end of the day. All and three of these values, visible on the screen, must be constantly tall to prevent the protagonist from losing consciousness. It will therefore be important to manage the twenty-four hours between rest, cultivation or hunting, cooking and nutrition.
Finally, attention should also be paid to weekly visits of the agent in charge of controlling us. It will be our job conceal any evidence of our illegal activities, penalty a level of suspicion very high at the end of the inspection e more frequent checks, which translate into less time available to devote to our projects. If this cauldron of activity already seems rich and full-bodied to you, then we must not forget the numerous tasks that must be completed in order to simply advance in the adventure.
A neighbor as a friend
Mr. Prepper proposes different missions, primary and secondary, necessary to get to the end credits. A long chain of quests that will intertwine and that will interest both some inhabitants from Mellerville than the construction of our bunker. The intertwining of these missions will allow the player to carry on the plot and reveal a gameplay that is enriched by the hour. It will then be up to us to start the business with i neighbors, sell or produce what they ask for and buy in exchange seeds for growing vegetables, raw materials e books. The latter will be necessary to culturally enrich the protagonist and allow him to improve his skills. In addition, each mission completed and each product traded will increase the confidence between Prepper and the citizens, with consequent particularly useful economic advantages.
Developing strong ties with the neighborhood will then allow us to access new areas of Mellerville, like the forest, the mine and the desert. Each of these zones will have different levels of exploration which we can access by completing other specific quests. Here there will be no lack of clashes against the wild animals that populate the biomes and that we will face with baseball bats or firearms. A “Combat system” (if we want to define it) based on a point and click which will soon become repetitive.
Now that we understand the amount of tasks to complete each day, we understand how all these activities take time, especially the larger ones. There will be cases where for to build of the specific objects, fifteen components of metal, ten of glass and so on will be required, all of which overall realization times they will turn out a lot high. As previously said, therefore, this aspect affects – together with all those factors related to the survival of the protagonist – on the development of the storyline. A narrative roller coaster which can block the curiosity of even the toughest and most tireless players.
As mentioned at the beginning of our review, the development team has brought the point and click play system that characterizes Mr. Prepper from the PC to the console world. Such porting turned out to be far from perfect, cumbersome and capable of taking players a long time to get used to the Xbox keys. On the graphic front, however, the title is pleasant even without making one cry out to a miracle. Finally, a dutiful note should be made towards the location since the game, despite being available in Italian, is characterized by a translation approximate and poorly maintained. Our advice is therefore to play it, but only if you chew the English language well.
