Movies Oscar Academy accepts Finnish film as Somali – Nominates for best international film

Exceptionally, two Finnish-drawn films top the nominations in the Oscar-winning category for international cinema. The actual nominations will be announced in February.

Finnish film Guled & Nasra has been eligible to compete for an Oscar as a representative of Somalia in the non-English or international film award class. The award-winning U.S. Film Academy released a list of eligible films on Sunday night.

In advance it was unclear how Guled & Nasran origin and nationality are defined. The film is in Somali and shot in Djibouti, but in Finland the film has been considered domestic. The working group is multinational and the main production company is Bufo from Helsinki. The director and screenwriter is Finnish Somali Khadar Ahmed. Internationally, the film is known as The Gravedigger’s Wife.

A total of 93 states have submitted their own candidates to the competition this year. Somalia is the only one in the series for the first time.

From Finland a film spoken mainly in Russian has been chosen as the representative for the same race Cabin No. 6. Juho Kuosmasen known as directing, the film won second prize at the Cannes Film Festival this summer.

The actual Oscar nominations will be announced in early February 2022, when five nominated films in the non-English language award category will also be released. Already in December, the Academy will reduce the list of non-English-language award-winning films to 15 films.
