Jackass Forever. Directed by Jeff Tremaine. 96 min. K16. ★★★★
Is hard imagine a less sentimental movie about friendship. And about friendship Jackass Forever is about it, even if it’s expressed by slapping friends in the crotch and arranging concussions for them.
The core of the stunt group is united by a TV series made in 2000-07, which produced a roaring laugh by combining bad taste with straightforward pain. It shot comrades with a giant spinner into a pond, tied a rope between a penis and a remote-controlled helicopter toy, and rode a bike to the side of a shelter while a guy was doing business inside.
Three films have been made on the basis of the series in the past, but the latest is already 12 years old. Jackass Forever so it’s a reunion of friends – and who wouldn’t need one in those times.
Jeff Tremainen the work directed by him hits not only the pain points of the group members but also the communal pain points. As everyday life and encounters become more and more square, the group’s constant relapse together offers a strange comfort.
In addition, the viewer can also take part in its corporeality: When a hairy spider moves into a bug-afraid helmet, the muscles tense. When Dave England begins to need a flea bowl, laughs. When the bull rushes towards it Johnny Knoxville, heart beating in the chest. In a couple of scenes, one of the photographers also sleeps in his mask.
To part of the audience loose nostalgia is also pushed. The Remu group makes their old stunts new, often bigger. Their influence is reflected in the way the newest members of the group giggle at watching the TV series as brochures. The core group members are starting to be in their fifties.
However, the film doesn’t need nostalgia for its fuel. Its humor works equally well for those who are used to watching their entertainment from Tiktok.
Although Jackass Forever not specifically inviting to seek intellectual interpretations — “This is not a meeting of Mensa,” as one in the crowd points out — one might well try the definition of an avant-garde. Body boundaries are broken and bodies are broken in a way that tests taboos. Both the anus and the tens of liters of sperm flash on the screen.
Between stunts also try friendship. However, when a friend is taken to the ambulance, confessions of love are shouted after.
Perhaps the purpose of the whole series of tricks is ultimately to produce friendship and shared memories. The pain connects.
